Location

Salobreña: the castle, sugar cane and the sea

The apartment is in Caleta-La Guardia, with the beach just across the promenade. A kilometre away the old town begins: whitewashed streets climbing up to the Moorish castle, with the rock jutting into the sea and the sugar-cane fields below. This is the Costa Tropical: you can swim from May to October and still spend the same weekend skiing in Sierra Nevada or walking in the Alpujarra.

La Guardia beach, across the promenade

It is Salobreña's long, quiet beach: dark sand, a flat promenade and the great rock closing the view. Cross the promenade and you are on the shore — no car, no hills and no fighting for a spot, not even in August.

Things to do in Salobreña

The castle and the old town

The old town climbs the rock in whitewashed streets up to the Moorish castle, with the plain and the sea below. At sunset, the miradors of the Villa quarter and the Paseo de las Flores are the plan.

The Peñón and the beaches

La Guardia, across from the apartment, is the long quiet beach; the great Peñón rock splits the coast in two, with La Charca beach on the other side. You can walk from one to the other along the shore.

Hiking and nature

Flat walks among custard-apple orchards and sugar cane on the plain; the Maro–Cerro Gordo cliffs half an hour away; and for serious legs, the Alpujarra and Sierra Nevada an hour by car.

Where to eat

The beach bars along the La Guardia promenade for espetos and fried fish next door; the restaurant at the foot of the Peñón to eat with your feet almost in the water; and tapas up in the old town.

Salobreña's year

The San Juan bonfires on the beach every June, the Tendencias festival in July, Easter processions through the Villa's streets and the big town fair in October.

Getting here

By plane: Granada (79 km), Málaga (103 km) or Almería (136 km), then by car on the A-7 motorway, which drops you in Salobreña in no time. The car goes in the included parking space.
